Site Boards

Site boards are one of the most useful ways to mark a project, show approval details and give passing traffic clear information. HM Graphics & Signs designs, manufactures and installs site boards for developments, property marketing and municipal work across Hartbeespoort, Pretoria and the wider Gauteng area.

Site Boards

What a site board is and where it works best

A site board is a purpose-made sign used on building sites, new developments, road reserves, property launches and public projects. It can carry project names, contractor details, rendering images, leasing information, safety notices, directional details or municipal reference information. For developers and property owners it gives a site an organised, professional look while also helping people identify the work taking place.

We produce site boards for short-term campaigns and for longer outdoor use. In Hartbeespoort, Pretoria, Centurion, Brits and Tshwane, boards often need to cope with strong sun, dust, rain and the occasional wind burst off open sites. We specify the board material, fixing method and print finish to suit the exposure, whether the board sits on fencing, a wall, poles or a frame.

Site boards are used on retail centres, estate developments, commercial yards, municipal works, schools and community projects. They also suit property marketing where the board must be visible from a road and readable quickly by pedestrians and drivers.

Sizes, materials and finishing options

We make site boards in common project sizes as well as custom dimensions. Typical boards start at 600 x 400 mm for notice boards and can go up to large format panels for roadside visibility. Standard sizes include 1.2 x 2.4 m, 1.5 x 3 m and 2 x 3 m, although we can build to your frame or boundary line if the site needs something else.

Depending on budget and lifespan, boards can be made from fluted polypropylene, foam board, aluminium composite, corrugated sheeting or printed vinyl applied to a rigid substrate. For long-term outdoor use, aluminium composite or similar rigid panel options are often better because they stay flatter and resist moisture movement. For short projects or fast-moving campaigns, lighter boards are quicker to handle and cheaper to replace.

  • Single or double-sided printing for street-facing sites and access roads
  • Matte or gloss finish to reduce glare in direct sunlight
  • UV-stable print for outdoor exposure
  • Reinforced edges, drilled fixing points or framed mounting options
  • Optional cut-outs for poles, fencing or temporary stands

We can also add QR codes, project stages, contact details, directional arrows and safety icons where needed.

Installation on fencing, walls and free-standing frames

Installation depends on the site and how long the board must stay up. A temporary board may be cable-tied or bolted to temporary fencing, while a long-term board may be mounted on a steel frame, masonry wall or timber posts set into the ground. For roadside applications, visibility, wind loading and access for maintenance all matter. A board that is too light can flex too much, while an oversized panel without enough support can twist or pull loose.

Our installation team checks the site before fitting the board, looking at access, surface condition, wind exposure and the safest fixing points. If a board sits near a municipal road or public pavement, we also factor in local placement rules and whether permits or approval documents are needed. This avoids delays after installation and helps keep the sign where it belongs.

If your site is active with moving vehicles or contractors on the ground, we plan the installation sequence to limit disruption. In some cases we can coordinate with other branding work on the same day, such as directional signs, safety boards or branded hoarding panels. Where there is no power nearby, the board itself needs none, which makes it useful for remote plots and developing areas.

When a site board needs power or extra services

Most site boards are passive printed signs and do not need electricity or gas. That makes them simple to maintain and suitable for places with load-shedding, unfinished services or off-grid sites. If a project calls for illumination, we can discuss separate lighting options, but these are not standard for every board. If you need the board to carry lighting hardware, we will advise on the structure and safe routing for cabling.

Some projects also need more than the board itself. For example, a property launch may need matching directional signs, temporary event branding or vehicle graphics for site staff. A municipality may require a board that stays in place through phases of work, with space for changing dates or contractor details. In those cases we can make a board system that allows panels to be updated instead of replaced each time.

Where the board is used close to coastal humidity or near wet ground, we recommend sealed edges and fittings that resist rust. It saves money over time and prevents the sign from looking tired after only a few months.

How to keep site boards readable and in good condition

Outdoor boards take a beating from sun, dust, rain and handling. The easiest way to keep them looking presentable is to choose the right material from the start and clean them on a regular schedule. A quick wash with clean water and a soft cloth is usually enough for most printed boards. Avoid harsh solvents and abrasive pads, because these can damage the print surface.

If the board sits on a busy site, check the fixing points after heavy wind or after construction traffic has moved close to it. A loose panel can rattle, crack or bend. If the message on the board changes often, ask for a replacement face or a layout that allows panels to be swapped out. That is often cheaper than reprinting the whole sign every time a phase changes.

  • Inspect brackets, bolts and cable ties during site visits
  • Clean dust and mud before it builds up on printed areas
  • Watch for fading on south-west facing boards and replace when needed
  • Remove or update old project details once the phase is complete
  • Store spare boards flat and dry if you are using multiple campaign runs

Good upkeep helps the site look controlled and keeps the message legible from the road.

Before Ordering a Branded Gazebo

Before ordering, confirm where the board will stand, how long it must last and who needs to approve the artwork. A board for a three week site launch is very different from one that must stand through a year of construction. It also helps to know if the board is for public viewing, internal site use or municipal compliance. A clear brief lets us quote and produce the right sign.

Please check the following before sending your details:

  • Exact board size and whether you need one side or two
  • Fixing method, such as wall mount, fence mount or free-standing frame
  • Artwork supplied or artwork needed from us
  • Any permit, municipal wording or disclaimer requirements
  • Project start date and whether the board is temporary or long-term
  • Site conditions, including wind, dust, moisture and access for installation

If you are unsure about any of these points, we can assist with a site survey and artwork setup. That usually prevents last minute changes and helps keep the project on budget.

Questions we get asked

Do site boards need municipal approval?

Some boards do, especially when they face a public road, pavement or municipal reserve. We recommend checking placement rules early so the board can be fitted correctly and without delay.

Can you make a board for a temporary project?

Yes. We supply short-term boards for launches, site notices and phase-based work, as well as stronger long-term boards for extended exposure.

What artwork do I need to send?

Send your project name, logo files, wording, site address, sizes and any approval notes. If you do not have final artwork, we can help prepare it for print.
