Vinyl Cutting

What Our Vinyl Cutting Covers

Vinyl cutting is ideal when you need lettering, numbering, logos or simple graphics that must look sharp at close range and hold up outdoors. We cut single-colour vinyl for shop windows, fleet markings, safety notices, direction boards, office walls and promotional panels, with sizing matched to the surface and viewing distance.

For most applications we work with standard vinyl widths from 610 mm to 1,220 mm and can join panels where required for larger artwork. Lettering can be cut as small as 15 mm high for indoor labels, while vehicle side graphics and fascia text are often produced from 50 mm to 500 mm high depending on the layout. We also prepare reverse-cut graphics for glass, so the text reads correctly from the outside.

  • Shop window lettering and trading hours
  • Vehicle names, contact details and fleet numbers
  • Directional arrows, safety notices and compliance labels
  • Wall text for receptions, offices and corridors
  • Board branding for launches, promotions and events

How We Prepare Artwork for Cutting

Good vinyl work starts with proper artwork prep. Our team checks spacing, line weight, stroke thickness and scale before cutting, because text that looks fine on a screen can fail once it is reduced for a door panel or stretched across a bakkie canopy. Ayanda Mavuso handles the artwork setup and checks that outlines are clean, grouped correctly and ready for machine cutting.

If you already have a logo or wording, we can work from supplied artwork or recreate simple text layouts where needed. We convert fonts to outlines, remove tiny gaps that could lift after cutting, and nest the shapes to reduce waste on material. For reflective or high-visibility uses, we also consider edge clearance, contrast and daytime legibility.

  • Artwork cleaned and scaled to the actual job size
  • Letter spacing adjusted for better reading from 3 m to 20 m
  • Cut paths checked to avoid lifting corners and weak joins
  • Material colours matched to the supplied brief where possible

Our Cutting and Weeding Process

Once the artwork is approved, Riaan Odendaal and the production team set up the material for cutting on the correct feed direction and tension. Clean cutting matters because poor pressure settings can nick the vinyl backing or leave uncut fibres that tear during weeding. We use a careful cut-and-test method on smaller details before the full run starts, especially on fine lettering and small icon work.

After cutting, each piece is weeded by hand so the unwanted vinyl is removed cleanly. Transfer tape is then applied to hold the graphic in position for fitting. For multi-colour work, we separate layers and label them so the installer can align everything on site without confusion, which is especially useful on bigger fleet or municipal jobs where time on site is limited.

  • Test cut carried out on the chosen vinyl type
  • Fine detail checked before the full batch is released
  • Weeding done by hand to protect small points and corners
  • Transfer tape applied for easier installation and alignment

Where Vinyl Cutting Works Best

Vinyl is one of the most practical options for surfaces that need clear messaging without heavy fabrication. It works well on glass, painted steel, powder-coated panels, ACP boards, plastic substrates and vehicle paint, as long as the surface is cleaned and the right adhesive grade is selected. In hot Gauteng conditions and in the moisture around Hartbeespoort, the choice of vinyl matters, especially on exposed glass and vehicles that sit outside all day.

For outdoor use we often recommend cast or premium calendered vinyl, depending on the expected lifespan and the shape of the surface. Flat boards and windows suit standard cut vinyl well, while curved vehicle panels need better conformability. We also advise on laminate protection when the graphic will face strong sun, regular washing or municipal cleaning routines.

  • Windows and glass doors
  • Delivery vehicles, bakkies and trailers
  • Roadside and site boards
  • Interior walls and reception areas
  • Temporary event and campaign graphics

Turnaround, Pricing and Site Fitting

Turnaround depends on artwork approval, quantity and the level of detail. Simple cut lettering can often move quickly once the layout is confirmed, while larger rollouts and multi-branch branding need more production time and scheduling. For Tshwane and Pretoria site work, Kagiso Ndlovu plans fitting around access hours, security rules and any municipal or building requirements that affect installation times.

Our pricing is based on material type, cut complexity, total square metre coverage, number of colours and whether fitting is required. A small window quote will not be priced the same as a fleet rollout, and we prefer to be clear about what is included before production starts. If a client needs repeated rebranding across several branches in Centurion, Brits or Akasia, we can price the project in stages to keep rollout manageable.

  • Simple text jobs can often be turned around faster
  • Complex logos, multi-colour layers and larger runs need more lead time
  • Pricing reflects material grade, labour and fitting scope
  • We can quote per item, per branch or per rollout phase

Care and Maintenance for Longer Life

Cut vinyl is low-maintenance, but it still needs sensible care if you want it to last. On vehicles, avoid high-pressure washing at the edges for the first few days after fitting, and keep detergent off the seams where possible. On windows and boards, a soft cloth and mild cleaner are usually enough. Harsh solvents, abrasive pads and rough scrubbing will shorten the life of the finish.

For exterior jobs in sun and coastal humidity, we recommend checking the graphics every 6 to 12 months, especially around corners, joins and exposed leading edges. In busy retail areas or on municipal vehicles, earlier inspection is useful because repeated washing, vibration and daily heat cycles can slowly lift corners. If something starts to peel, it is best to repair it early rather than wait for the whole panel to fail.

  • Inspect vehicle graphics every 6 months
  • Check shopfront lettering every 6 to 12 months
  • Clean with soft cloths and non-abrasive products
  • Report lifting corners early for quick repair
