Banner Walls Built For High Impact Backdrops

A banner wall is a large-format printed or tensioned backdrop system used where you need a neat branded face for photos, speeches, product reveals or event entrances. It normally combines a metal frame or stand with a graphic skin that is stretched tight so the surface sits flat and reads well from a distance. For temporary activations, the structure can be freestanding. For longer use, it can be fixed to a wall or custom base.

These systems are common at shopping centre launches, municipal events, press backdrops, conference stages and sports functions. They are also useful for retail openings where a clean branded wall is needed behind a display table or media area. In windy or outdoor spaces, the frame must be anchored properly, and in some cases weighted bases or ground fixing is required. If the event is in Pretoria, Brits or Centurion, we also look at access, transport route and whether the site has load-shedding backup if lighting is being used.

Sizes, Frame Options And Print Finishes

Banner walls are made to suit the space and the viewing distance. Smaller units can start at about 2 m x 2.4 m, while larger event backdrops may run to 6 m wide or more. Standard height is usually 2.4 m, but taller or stepped layouts can be made for stage use. The frame can be straight, curved or modular depending on the visual effect and how often the unit needs to be moved.

Most clients choose one of these setups:

  • Freestanding tubular frame with tensioned graphic skin
  • Wall-mounted banner system for permanent branding
  • Double-sided backdrop for walk-through areas
  • Modular panels for repeat use across different venues

Graphics are typically printed on PVC banner, blockout banner or stretch fabric depending on the finish required. PVC is practical for short-term outdoor use and heavier handling, while fabric gives a softer photographic look for media and indoor events. A matte finish helps reduce glare from camera flash and strong venue lighting, which is especially useful for press calls and televised setups.

Where Banner Walls Work Best

Banner walls suit places where people need to see a brand clearly and quickly. They work well behind podiums, at expo stands, in reception areas, next to product tables and at ceremonial openings. Retailers use them for roadshow promotions, seasonal campaigns and launch days, while municipalities use them for community notices, stakeholder events and public-facing programmes.

They are also useful on sites where a normal wall is not available or looks untidy. A banner wall gives you a controlled background for photographs and signage, and helps cover mixed surfaces, service doors or construction areas. For outdoor use in Tshwane or Hartbeespoort, we consider sun exposure, wind, rain splash and how the system will be packed down after the event. Coastal humidity is less of a concern here, but dust and strong UV can still affect print life and colour shift over time.

When a backdrop has to sit for several days or weeks, we can factor in servicing access, safe fixing points and whether the structure must be moved between venues. If your campaign is part of a larger rollout, we can match the banner wall with pull-up units, directional signage and vehicle branding so the visual message stays consistent.

Installation, Power And Site Readiness

Installation depends on the size of the frame and whether the banner wall is temporary or fixed. Temporary systems are usually installed on site with a small team, using level bases, tension fittings and anchoring where needed. Permanent or semi-permanent units may need wall brackets, steel supports or a fabricated base plate. We check the floor space first so the unit does not block walkways, emergency exits or access to equipment.

Power is only needed if the setup includes lighting, digital screens or special event equipment. The banner wall itself does not need power or gas. If you want the backdrop lit, we can advise on safe placement for LED floodlights or uplighting, and whether the venue has backup power during load-shedding. For outdoor events, we also check if the site has generators, cable covers, and enough clearance for installers and delivery vehicles.

  • Level ground or solid wall face
  • Clear access for delivery and fitting
  • Space for anchoring, weights or wall fixings
  • Lighting position if photos or video are planned
  • Weather exposure and wind direction

A quick site survey saves trouble on the day. In our experience, many issues come from a venue that looks fine on paper but has uneven paving, low ceilings or poor access for the frame sections. A proper measure up helps prevent last minute rework and keeps the install on time.

Care, Cleaning And Repeat Use

A banner wall should stay tight and clean if you want the print to hold up and look sharp. Dust can be wiped off with a soft cloth, and light marks can usually be cleaned with mild soapy water. Harsh solvents should be avoided because they can dull the print face or damage the coating. If the wall is used outdoors, dry it before storage so moisture does not mark the material or corrode fittings.

For repeated use, the frame should be checked for loose clamps, bent sections and worn connectors. Tension graphics can loosen with frequent packing and transport, so the system may need re-tightening before a new campaign. If your banner wall is used at multiple venues in Gauteng, we can also refurbish the graphics when the branding changes. That is often more cost-effective than replacing the full structure every time, especialy for recurring activations.

We can also carry out maintenance for systems that have been damaged during transport, wind exposure or rough handling at an event. If a backdrop has been standing for a while, it is worth checking the print edges, stitching, tube alignment and base stability before the next rollout.

What To Check Before You Order

The best banner wall starts with a clear brief. We need to know the size, the venue type, whether the unit is for one day or ongoing use, and how often it will be moved. Artwork should be supplied in the correct dimensions, with logos, photos and text placed so they read well from the viewing distance. If the backdrop is for photos, keep important content away from the edges and centre it where cameras will pick it up.

Please check the following before ordering:

  • The exact width and height of the wall, frame or area available
  • Indoor or outdoor use
  • Freestanding, wall-mounted or modular format
  • Whether lighting will be used
  • How many times the unit will be reused
  • Deadline for printing, fabrication and installation

If you are not sure about the layout, our team can help with artwork prep, sizing and site surveys. We work from our Hartbeespoort base and serve Pretoria, Centurion, Brits, Akasia, Rosslyn, Soshanguve and wider Tshwane. Clients can use the enquiry form on our contact page to get started, and we will take it from there with clear timings and practical advice.
